Mapping Our Place in the World. 🗺
Our Year 6 students have officially launched their new IPC unit, “Here and Now, There and Then”.
The ‘Entry Point’ is always an exciting time in the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), designed to hook students’ interest and spark curiosity before deep learning begins. To kick off this topic, students immersed themselves in the geography and culture of their immediate surroundings—Indonesia.
From sketching detailed maps of the archipelago to creating patriotic artwork, they are beginning to understand how the ‘Here and Now’ is shaped by the history of ‘There and Then’.
It is the start of a fascinating journey into how time and place influence who we are today.

Cubes, Syllables, and Life Cycles: A Busy Week in Year 2! 🔢🌱
It has been another dynamic week of learning for our Year 2 students, moving seamlessly between hands-on problem solving and digital research.
Here is a snapshot of their progress:
➗ Maths: We continued our exploration of ‘groups of’ (an essential foundation for multiplication). Moving from concrete manipulatives to the abstract, students are learning to draw groups and use ‘Thinking Blocks’ to visualise and solve questions effectively.
📝 English: The focus this week was on the rhythm of language. Students have been investigating multisyllabic words, identifying where the breaks occur to improve both their reading and spelling accuracy.
🐸 Science: In our unit ‘Humans and Animals Grow’, we looked back and looked forward. Students discussed how they have changed since they were babies and imagined their future selves in 20 years. They also combined traditional learning with technology, using iPads to research the specific names of baby animals.

We believe that while books sharpen the intellect, movement builds the spirit. By trading the classroom for the track, students discover that success requires more than just intelligence—it demands the courage to take a leap.
From clearing hurdles to mastering the high jump, every physical challenge teaches the resilience to land and the determination to rise again.

From the Bus Stop to the Bookshelf: How Research is Made. 🚍📝
As part of our after-school Journal Article Writing Programme, Irish embarked on a comprehensive research journey to understand public transport preferences in Surabaya. Here is a look behind the scenes of her study:
1️⃣ Field Observations: Irish did not rely solely on secondary data. She, alongside her mentor, navigated the city’s transport ecosystem directly—experiencing the Commuter Line, the iconic Suroboyo Bus, and the nimble Wira-Wiri feeder vans to understand the commuter experience.
2️⃣ Data Collection: To ensure her findings were grounded in reality, Irish visited various bus stops and universities in West Surabaya. She distributed questionnaires (both offline and online) to gather quantitative data from real public transport users.
3️⃣ Analysis & Publication: Back at school, the raw data was meticulously analysed to uncover trends in safety, cost, and time efficiency. After writing the introduction, results, and conclusion, the manuscript underwent a strict formatting and review process before being officially accepted by the publisher.
This is true active learning—applying academic skills to solve real-world urban challenges.

Foundations for the future, one stroke at a time. 📝✨
In our classrooms, we understand the importance of solid foundations. Mastering handwriting and penmanship is a crucial step in a child’s academic journey, requiring focus, discipline, and dexterity.
This photo perfectly captures the quiet dedication our students bring to mastering these vital skills. Keep up the brilliant work!

At Surabaya European School, we believe that sport is an essential language of leadership. When our students step onto the football pitch, they are doing much more than just exercising; they are actively building their character. Through the beautiful game, they experience vital life lessons in real-time—learning that resilience means pushing forward even when the path is crowded, and that true skill requires the composure to maintain a calm mind under pressure.
Ultimately, they discover that whether they are winning possession or defending the line, the greatest victories are those found in the camaraderie and shared effort with their teammates.
