Happy 100th Day of School

On Wednesday 13th February, the children celebrated their first ‘100 Days at School’ this academic year with a dress up. We were excited to see children exploring the idea of how people might dress in 100 years time, we smiled at children dressed from 100 years ago and we marvelled at the creativity of those who had added 100 items to their clothing. From 100 dots to 100 safety pins, through 100 bows to 100 tallies, the clever use of imagination shone through. The first ‘100 Days of School’ highlighted the great learning that took place during Maths Week here at Surabaya European School.

Cross Country

A team of 30 SES primary school children from Years 2 to 7 took part in a Cross Country competition held at Sekolah Ciputra on Friday, November 2nd. There were close to 800 children racing on the day from schools around Surabaya. Everyone did their best and some of the SES students even came home with a medal. Special congratulations to the following students for attaining a top 5 finish:

Year 3 – Zachary, Leo, Langit and Mischa

Year 4 – Regan

Year 5 – Lintang and Vench

Year 6 – Ji In

Year 7 – Daniel

School Camp

This year Ms Chris, Mr Phillip and 15 Secondary students all travelled to Northern Thailand for the School Camp. The Maekok River Outdoor Education Centre is located next to a sleepy village called Thaton, near the Burmese border, and this is where we stayed for the five nights of our trip. Some of the activities that we did included: archery, climbing, team-building games, cycling, raft-building and rafting, hiking, confidence and  high ropes courses, night games, team tech challenge (creating a safe way for an egg to drop 20 metres using a handful of scrap materials), learning some Thai, going to a market and buying some ingredients, and then cooking them. Phew! That was a lot to pack into our trip but we all had a great time doing it all. Ms Chris and I were both very pleased with the way the students grew and developed during the camp, especially in events like the confidence course, and the high ropes course. These challenged some of the students and they really had to face their fears in order to complete them.

It was a busy time and we all came back drained of energy, but it was a thoroughly rewarding time and a fantastic experience for everyone.

SES Assembly Y9: 24 October 2017

We had a busy and very enjoyable assembly this morning which was led by Year 9 students. They gave impressive and informative presentations on some topics studied in Global Perspectives classes. We learned about poverty, education for girls and habitat destruction when making dams. Many thanks to Miss Allana and all the students!

Mr Mike and Miss Rini awarded medals to our winners from the Athletics Day. All of the students showed determination and gave their best efforts. Mr Mike commented that we had been impressed by the atmosphere and sportsmanship shown by all the students.

As usual, several teachers gave out certificates to students for their good work, attitude, progress and other positive matters. Our next assembly will be on Tuesday, 14 November which will be headed by the Year 8 students.

IAYP PPLH May 27 & 28 2017

Over the weekend four intrepid adventurers from Year 9 set out to complete a practice journey for their International Award for Young People (IAYP).

The International Award requires participants at Bronze level to complete a two day, one night adventure where they explore an area under their own steam and prove themselves self sufficient in that time.
For this practice, our team went to explore Gunung Bekel and surrounding areas with a scientific purpose in mind, to collect data about how altitude and temperature can affect plant growth.
Day One saw an attempt at scaling Gunung Bekel, and while the team didn’t make it to the top, they did manage an enjoyable hike and collected lots of data (and learnt a lot about exploring in the process!)
When the team returned to base at PPLH they then had to prepare their own dinner before they could chill out and reflect upon their day. Their exploits in the kitchen proved that they still have a bit to learn about cooking for a hungry team, but they did manage a good feast in the end!
Day Two required a further 6 hours of activity from the group and once they had cooked breakfast and prepared their lunch they headed out again to explore the lower reaches of the mountain and gather further data, comparing their experiences from the day before and working well as a team to reach their goal.
The group returned home on Sunday evening, tired but happy, having completed a very useful practice journey. In the future, they will have to apply all they have learnt to another trip to qualify for the Adventurous Journey section of their award. And you know what? I think they’ll do very well.

Secondary Trip April 2017

SES school camp to Bali in April was an adventurous time for everyone. We spent five days in Eastern Bali experiencing a wide range of outdoor activities including trekking, white water rafting and cycling as well as some more local activities like a market visit and cooking challenge. Great fun was had by all!

Model United Nations

Our delegates from Year 8 to 11 went to Qatar to represent the interests of Liberia during the Model United Nations from January 26 – 29. This conference represented the culmination of many hours of preparation by the students in the lead up to the event.

Secondary Halloween night: 30 October 2015

The Student Council organised an exciting event for both primary and secondary students. Firstly, primary students played a variety of Halloween games, ate and enjoyed some music. Following this our secondary students enjoyed festive food, dancing and music supplied by DJ Tripleks. Students from other schools in Surabaya attended our party. The teachers, teaching assistants, office staff, support staff, Student Council and prefects and parents all worked very hard to make this a fun and outstanding event! Below is the link to the SES halloween party video made by the DJ Tripleks’ crew.
